About the Project

St. Louis City, Missouri

CBB partnered with the City of St. Louis to complete enhancements at the “Front Door to Forest Park” (Skinker Boulevard/McCausland Avenue and Clayton Road, Oakland Avenue, Clayton Avenue). CBB completed a traffic study at this complex intersection for the City of St. Louis, that resulted in a conceptual plan used to redesign this critical intersection for the St. Louis region. Using the concept plan, CBB successfully prepared a Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) program grant application securing $1.6 million in Federal funding for the City.  The CMAQ program has a multi-modal focus on transportation and strives to develop improvement projects with an environmental benefit.

CBB completed the design plans for this six-legged intersection, one of the most complex intersections in the City. The project provided new traffic signals to replace the aging and deficient system, as well as pedestrian enhancements that included the addition of marked crosswalks and signalized pedestrian crossings. The project also included the extension of a dual use trail that connects Forest Park to a mile of new sidewalk and buffered bicycle lanes on Oakland Avenue, extending all the way to Hampton Avenue. The bicycle lanes were established via a “road diet” by converting the underutilized four lane section of Oakland Avenue to two lanes of traffic.  Additional pedestrian crossings were installed on Oakland Avenue which included pedestrian flashing beacons greatly enhancing this intersection for the many users and visitors of Forest Park.

Included in the project, which was recently referred to as an “improvement for all” by Forest Park Forever, was a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon, which is an important element that adds to pedestrian safety in the area. “Working on the project was an exciting opportunity for CBB,” says Christopher Brammeier, project principal. “The community enhancements resulting from this project will have a major impact to all park users, and the entire St. Louis region.”
